A Primer On Maneuver Warfare

By Matthew Ellis

When it comes to choosing battle strategies, military tacticians often have a wide range of options. One strategy that has been deployed in the battlefield countless times is maneuver warfare. Evidence of its use can be drawn from the wars that General Napoleon Bonaparte fought to modern conflicts. It is a strategy that chiefly relies on incapacitating an opposing force by impacting its ability to make key decisions. It is more of a shock and awe strategy.

It is no secret that warfare is primarily based on movement and kill rate. Each side attempts to occupy more territory and kill more enemies with each wave of its attack. Throughout its deployment in conflicts, it had proven most effective when adopted by scattered units that are properly trained. Small units have always been effective when adopting the technique due to the fact that they have a lesser risk of attrition that full standing armies. Small units attacking from various directions also hold the all important element of surprise.

In most battles, success is usually gauged by the number of enemy equipment destroyed, territory occupied and combatants killed. Attrition battles portray a general lack of creativity from both opposing groups. A shock and awe attack, on the other hand, often causes the party being attacked to panic and make a retreat. This way, the attacking force gets sufficient latitude to reoccupy seized ground and attain its primary objectives.

Napoleon is one of the generals who are recorded in history as being successful in the deployment of this strategy in war. It is a known fact that he was able to overwhelm armies that were numerically superior. In his approach, he would charge rapidly against his enemies, leaving them shocked and immobile while at it.

This is an aspect that was well manifested in the France versus Austria war in Northern Italy. Despite the numerical superiority of the Austrian forces, the French overwhelmed them and gave them little chance to reorganize. This victory served as a benchmark for other generals in future battles.

The mechanization of movement in the 1850s brought about a new challenge to the implementation of the strategy. Warring factions could finally match their speeds. This development necessitated the creation of a new battle plan, albeit based on the same strategy. Attacking troops would encircle their enemies and quickly destroy their strong points, thereby rendering them incapacitated.

The massive success of the Germans during the early stages of WW2 can also be linked to the technique. At the time, battle involved the heavy usage of tanks. German armored divisions, commanded by Erwin Rommel, would launch quick attacks against allied troop formations. The tactic was latter billed the Lightning or Blitzkrieg Attack.

Maneuvering also has its limitations. For instance, it is not effective without prior intelligence on enemy formations. This became apparent in the Lebanon War in 2006. By the end of the war, the Israelis had not met their objective of decimating the Hezbollah command.

Finding The Best Female Anti Hero Novel

By Stephen Baker

If you do your shopping online these days, there's no reason why you can't find great books there as well. The good thing about finding a female anti hero novel this way is that you will see such a wide variety of options, and so you will have a better chance of finding one that is perfect for you or whoever you are buying it for. There are some times when this is simply the only way to find a good book these days since so many bookstores have gone out of business.

If you are a part of a book club, it is nice to be able to ask your fellow members if there are any books that they have read lately in this genre. This gives you the chance to find out the inside scoop about whether or not it's really great story. It is also very nice to have people who can talk to you about the story along the way who will actually understand what you were talking about, rather than just nod along and pretend like they're listening.

The problem with having so many stories that are focused on males and their own personal struggles is that it doesn't always seem like the most relatable thing for females. If you want to have young girls who have characters that they can identify with and then grow with as the characters overcome their own personal struggles, it is necessary to find books that feature main characters who are girls. It is likely that as more of these books come out, more creative young people will read them and then write books like them of their own.

When a main character is more of an antihero than a hero, more people might be able to identify with him or her more easily. This is because people are not black and white. The struggle between good and evil in everyone is as complicated as it can get.

These types of stories are generally more interesting. It's just more fun to read about characters who have problems of their own. It will leave you wondering whether or not they will have a happy ending.

You have probably heard that reading is good for you. This is definitely true, and the more reasons you can find to do it, the better. It is nice when you have found a good book to make this brain exercise less of a chore.

There are plenty of reasons why many people have a hard time getting to sleep at night, but one of the big reasons is using too many electronic devices too close to bedtime. Some people don't realize that these screens have an effect on the brain that makes you think that it is still daytime. Choosing to read a book instead will help your brain find sleep more easily when your head hits the pillow.

The best way to find out about what a book is going to contain is by reading the synopsis. This should hopefully do a pretty good job of describing the storyline without giving too much away. Just looking at the cover can often be very misleading.

The Boydian Philosophy Approach To Morality

By Gregory Turner

Morality has always been a pretty hot topic for debate, especially when the concept of good and bad being innate or created by society is being argued about. For one group, morality is something artificial and just made by man while the other group believes morality is already existent but just discovered by humans. One philosophy that supports the latter is known as the Boydian philosophy.

This philosophical field is based on the arguments of scientific realism of philosopher Richard Boyd. According to Boyd, moral realism is very similar to scientific realism in a sense that science has already existed for many years and has just been given a label and explored. Similarly, humans already have an inborn sense of what is good and bad and should just be explored.

The basic premise of Boyd is very simple. He states that scientific realism is most likely true. If scientific realism is most likely true, then moral realism is also most likely true since they are in a very similar context.

To further illustrate, take a look at the atom, which is the basic building block of everything in the world. The atom, when theorized of its existence, could not be seen by the naked eye nor could it be felt using the other 4 senses as well even though scientists believed they exist. Years down the road, scientists created a special microscope for seeing atoms and were able to see them.

To put that in context, it can be said that morality is pretty much like the atom in its early days. Everyone knows it is there and everyone knew that it is integral to the growth of society, but nobody could ever prove that it is there because it cannot be seen. This is why Boyd says that it may be possible that there could be moral entities that can help shape its existence.

His principle states that scientific realism delves in tackling the so called unknown and labeling them. For many years, scientific theories and principles have worked for people which is why they are followed and used to prove some truths. It is only later on that full scientific evidence can prove the existence of scientific entities and could solidify some theories as truth.

In that sense, there is a possibility that a moral entity exists, just like how scientific entities also do exist. The reason to believe that is because morality is already working for the society and has already been an embedded part of people for many decades. However, it is really hard to prove or measure its existence because it is really hard to see or observe them the same way germs can be observed. This does not mean it is not there though.

Basically, this is what Boyd is trying to point out when he argues about morality. As there is no evidence discounting it, it is really open for debate as to whether it exists or not. However, Boyd toys with the idea that if scientific realism is real, then moral realism must be real too.

An Overview Of Counter Insurgency History

By Brian Richardson

Throughout the course of history, human beings have had to contend with conflict. From the slave uprising led by Spartacus more than 2000 years ago to modern day conflicts, the world has borne witness to changing strategies and weapon technology in the war theater. Most war tacticians are of the view that insurgencies are the most complicated to overcome. This article delves into counter insurgency history, albeit from an American perspective.

There are various types of insurgencies in the modern world. The ones that occur most are terrorism and guerilla warfare. A vast majority of wars that are related to terror take place in semi urban or urban settings. Guerilla warfare, on the other hand, is primarily based in rural places and jungles. Non state actors are the chief perpetrators of these kinds of insurgencies. Counterinsurgency is just a word used to refer to the act of crushing an insurgency or limiting its effects.

These days, most conflicts are concentrated in South East Asia, Africa and the Middle East. For years, the insurgent groups that have been dominant in these regions are Al Shabaab, ISIL, Al Qaeda and rebel organizations that have the intention of toppling governments. A couple of years back, the most recognized insurgent group in Latin America was FARC. Fortunately, it ended its conflict with the government and brought some much needed peace to Colombia when it recently signed a peace deal with the authorities.

Regardless of where most insurgencies emanate from, one truth is that the US army has been involved in counterinsurgency in most of them. Take the case of the Afghan Taliban insurgency, one that the US has countered for decades. Another one to include in the list is the international war on terror.

The history of this type of conflict is not limited to the post 2000 era. In the 1960s, the US got embroiled in a bloody war to weed out communist insurgents in Vietnam. The success of the operation has long been in dispute, with many calling it a pyrrhic victory on the part of the Americans. Around the same time, the American government went to the other side of the coin when it funded an insurgent militia to overthrow the communist government of Fidel Castro in Cuba.

The proxy war, famously labeled the Bay of Pigs invasion, failed to attain its objectives. This is because the communist Cuban government had been made aware of the impending invasion and had prepared adequately for it. Experts in military history often bill it as one of the greatest military and foreign policy embarrassments in American history.

Counterinsurgencies are often launched with three broad objectives. They include the achievement of political and economic stability plus security. Counterinsurgency is basically aimed at getting things back to normal. During conflict, economies suffer, there is political instability and civilians stand lose their lives at any moment.

There are many authors whose literary works debunk the myths that normally surround counterinsurgency. Some opine that as long as an insurgent group has genuine reasons for its actions, it is poised to succeed. Only time will ascertain the veracity of this hypothesis.
