Content Writing - A Novitiate's Guide To Success

By Christy Lyons

The art of writing web content can get your work published faster than you can imagine. Too many people waste their time posting unproductive rants and raves on blog sites or chasing after the wrong Bill - Shakespeare, instead of Dollar - only to fall flat on their collective faces. Getting started is not that difficult...you probably already have done so and you do not even know it!

So what's to do? First of all, you are already a writer if you participate on message boards or send out emails. No, not those one sentence responses on forums, rather your informative, concise, and persuasive responses to interesting and engaging discussions. Typically, we do not think of message board discussions as being good writing. Some is, some isn't. Such writings may sound frivolous at first, but as you further delve into the subject matter at hand, you will find yourself planting the seeds for the future harvest - you will have to pardon all these plant references, we happen to love gardening with a passion...now anyway...

Emails can also be an important article seed. What emails, you may ask - of course you wouldn't want to put spam in there, unless you enjoy playing pranks on your high school buddies with some unsolicited mail. And not that billet-doux you wanted to send to your better half back at home - we're referring to meaningful emails sent to family, friends and co-workers that might just have that foundation you need for an actual article.

To get started, examine what you have written, see if the topic is interesting, and then pull out three key points in your email to frame your article. In order for your article to scream "I AM ARTICLE, HEAR ME ROAR", the following elements need to be present - topic sentence, title, analysis of each key point, conclusion - and please, for the love of Dollar Bill Shakespeare (there, we said it), make sure all of these are not figuratively mailed-in. So you've got a thriving article plant full-grown from the email seed - now how's about transplanting them to an article directory, my friends?

You may have to rework your original email or message board contribution, but your original work can be the stepping stone you need to get started. Try creating a short bullet listing of each of the key points you made in the previous paragraph. If you are not confident in your proofreading, then how about asking somebody else, like a friend, to review the article? If the forum you posted on is receptive to article reviews, then by all means ask for their honest opinion. Use any comments or suggestions to improve or change your work.

Writing web content can actually be a whole lot of fun - it's not all about the Benjamins, if you come to think about it, though money is a pretty sweet reward. Get your start today by reviewing your "portfolio" of informative emails and engaging message board discussions -- plant your article seed today and it will result in a bountiful harvest tomorrow.
