The Seven Must Now Book Proposal Secrets

By Julie Clark Robinson

The first step in getting your book sold to a publisher is putting together a proposal so that potential publishers know why they should invest their resources in bringing your idea to the marketplace. Here's what you need to communicate:

1. The 'overview' or need for your particular book on the crowded retail (or online) bookshelf. Why would readers reach for it versus other books on the same topic? Why is this book concept timely and relevant to today's reader? Why are you the author to write it as opposed to others? What makes you the expert on the subject or why would readers relate to your particular point-of-view?

2. The Table of Contents and Chapter Outline. This is probably the section that you'll struggle with the most, but once it's complete the book will practically write itself. You'll need at least ten chapters to be considered 'meaty' enough for publication. Once you decide on the message of each chapter, write an engaging title for each. Then, craft a lead paragraph to demonstrate your unique 'voice' to your writing.

3. The Introduction. Take a little time to look over this section in existing non-fiction books to get a feel for the purpose of the Introduction. They vary, but in general this is where the author explains what he or she is setting out to do in the chapters that follow. This is also where you can announce any caveats that may exist. For example, "My advice here can't replace medical attention from a vet, but my twenty years of training stray dogs has taught me that"

4. Target Markets. This is where you take off your author hat and become all business. Publishers want to know that you understand the audience for your message. How old are they? What is their disposable income and why would they spend it on your book? Provide statistics to support your findings (and beef up the argument that your book is needed!).

5. Competitive Titles. Unless you've somehow reinvented the wheel with your subject, there are already several books on the shelves that are similar. Find three or four of them, read them, and offer a paragraph about their content. Then point out how your book differs and fills the need in a much better way.

6. Author Background. Once the publisher is convinced that your book is marketable, you need to prove that you have what it takes to write it. What is your background with regards to the title and your work ethic in general? Granted, you may never have published a book before, but you've worked in business for twenty years, meet deadlines and exceed expectations on a daily basis. You also should know that a publisher seeks to sell at least 10,000 books in order to consider a book from a first-time author a success. How will you as an author support this number? Do you teach dog obedience every Saturday? Have you written a related column in your local newspaper? In short, if you can prove that you have a built-in audience; this is where you do it.

7. Promotions. Gone are the glory days when authors were sent on posh book tours and the marketing was done by a department. Unless you're already a best seller, that is! You need to think outside of the box and help your publisher spread the word about your book. This is the section where you share your brainstorming ideas for book promotion. Would you print the title on #2 pencils and offer them to students on test days? Would you offer parents a forum on a web site to ask questions about parenting? Think outside of the box here and convince publishers that they would have a marketing partner in you.

Book Trailers: 5 Tips for Effectively Using Trailers

By Cash Nelson

Book trailer videos are the hot, new trend. But the driving question for you is why use these trailers to drive revenue. Some recent data gives ideas for some astonishingly effective ways to use book trailers.

Tip #1: Put up your video on your site and on your own YouTube channel. In April, 2010, Anthony Bruno reported that "fans are more engaged with videos posted to individual artists' Web sites." Of course, they are talking mostly about music videos, but we can generalize this to book videos. They report that "29% of the videos streamed on artist and label sites are watched in their entirety, compared to only 12% from aggregation services." Warner Music Group, then, doesn't license content to places like Vevo.com. The company, instead, drives fans to artists sites through custom-branded channels on YouTube. You should create your own YouTube channel, too.

Tip #2: Tweet about your book trailer. Bruno further records, "Another interesting finding is how social media services affect viewing. According to the study, fans linking to online videos via Twitter watch an average of 2:30 minutes, compared to 1:30 minutes on average watched by those finding the same videos via a search engine. Yet 76% of streams on artist or labels sites come as a result of online search, such as Google." Just after posting your book trailer to YouTube as well as your website, tweet.

Tip #3: Learn and use Search Engine Optimization (SEO).Before beginning distribution of your book trailer, you'll want to grasp the basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). There's no reason to make a website or book trailer or other articles and other content online if it content can't be found. That implies you want to think similar to a online search engine. For many websites 50%-80% of visitors come from search engine listings straight away to a webpage deep inside site. Every web page page needs to be optimized making sure that search engines like google can locate it; in addition, you will need to optimize your own book trailer so individuals will find it.

I can't give you a full understanding of SEO in one post, you need to study this topic. But one immediate thing to do is pay attention to the keywords that can be used to find you and your video:

Keywords. On YouTube, you will find there's difference in tags and keywords. Tags may be used by virtually anyone, whilst keywords are just used if you want to participate in the Promoted Videos ad system. In practice, however, a tag can be described as keyword and is fundamental to the success of your own video given that audiences use tags to browse. You need to know just what keywords individuals are looking for and Google makes it simple making use of their Google Keyword Tool.

Basically in a small number crucial words concerning your own video and you'll find a variety of the variety of ways people look for your data and website traffic counts per keyword or phrase. Make use of the list to choose what keywords you'll stress for the video. On YouTube.com, you only have about 100 characters for keywords, so choose keywords that are unique for a book.

For example, if you have a WWII history book, in particular about D-Day, you can consider these keywords:

Search Term Number of global searches/month for this keyword WWII 4,090,000 D-Day 1,500,000 d day wwii 5,400

Clearly, you should use WWII and D-Day as your main keywords, not the unhyphenated blend.

If your pen name includes three names, consider omitting the least used name, usually the middle name. You'll still be found with your first and last names and you can use the valuable space for a more important keyword.

Quite often, authors want to include the publisher's name. However, but if the publisher has Thousands of videos within the hosting service, one should think about this: will your video come up in top results for the name? If not, then omit the publisher's name favoring topical keywords.

As a final point, study the list of keywords for any probable undesired traffic. To illustrate, the keywords "little girls" gets hits from those attempting to find pornography. Make an effort to anticipate the viewers searching for the keywords you've chosen and ensure those are the right audience for the book. Edit your book trailer's internet page on YouTube including these keywords as tags.

Tip #4 Use book trailers as part of your marketing mix. When Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter World (vampire novels) was released in 2008, it was given a tremendous thrust by its book trailer which landed among YouTube's "Most Viewed" video in late July, 2008. How did the publisher make this happen?

Having a launch date of August 5 for the paranormal romance, St. Martin's had a substantial investment in a 350,000-copy first printing. They employed experts to develop a 33-second book trailer, Dark-Hunter "Acheron", then hired Zeitghost Media to manage the promotion. The house delivered an e-mail which included a hyperlink to the video on YouTube.com to 90,000 people at midnight on July 20, 2008, which had been preceded by teasers on July 17 and 18 announcing that something big was coming at midnight on the 20th. Zeitghost Media dispersed the video over the Word wide web, and a multitude of weblogs and Web-sites picked up and continue to feature it. As of this writing, it's obtained over 375,000 views. Within the Dark Hunter internet site and off-line, they also employed these online marketing resources: Ebook giveaways wallpaper, screen savers, cursors, banners Dark Hunter quiz publicity through media channels such as Publisher's Weekly Twitter feed, Facebook Fan page, MySpace page, Absolutely free short story to down load

The video was essential as a destination for possible visitors, but email announcements were utilised to jumpstart the video. When on the website, there were various methods to get the specifics of the publication. There were downloads, free gifts. Also, St. Martin's employed traditional press and several social media. Was it the book trailer that made the actual in people deciding to get the book? Or was it the mix of efforts? Nobody knows for certain, but it's very likely that it's the mixture that matters.

For your book trailer, look at the way will integrate with each of your other marketing efforts. Take with you a laptop and run a clip at the meeting or convention. Include a backlink to the trailer inside your email signature. Be imaginative and cross-promote in each and every way you can.

Tip #5 Use a group of book trailers. In May 2010, Jay Yarow and Kamelia Angelova reported that the shelf-life associated with a video is very short. Fifty percent the viewers of your YouTube.com video come in the initial six days. 75% of the viewers are inside first 20 days. Surely, there's likely to be a long tail, in which your video gets a few hits/day for some time. However, if you need a high level of sustained interest, you might want to consider a series of videos, distributed 1-3 weeks apart.

Come up with a combination of formal and informal trailers and, in today's world, get comfortable with creating videos - and lots of them.

Screenwriting -- Why it's Harder to Turn a Book into a Screenplay than the Other Way Around

By Danek S. Kaus

Someone recently asked me the question: Which is harder-turning a book into a screenplay or turning a screenplay into a book? Without any hesitation, I responded that it' s much harder to turn a book into a movie.

To begin with, you have much less space to tell your story when screenwriting. A novel can run 80,000 - 100,000 words and more, taking up hundreds of pages. A screenplay must, with very few exceptions, run 90 - 120 pages, with lots of white space on the pages. The average word count is somewhere around 20,000 - 25,000 words.

The reason there is a strict page count when screenwriting is that the rule of thumb when shooting a movie is that one screenplay page equals one minute of time on the screen. It doesn't always work out that way but you still need to be very careful with your page count.

So you can see the problem from the outset. Books have much more room to develop their stories and themes. They can spend a lot of time describing a scene or a character, and delve deeply into their backstory. Although it is important to keep an eye on page count because of production costs and marketing, novels have less exacting word counts.

Novels are much more flexible. They allow the writer to spend time on what interests them most. Novels also allow authors to have fun with the language, to show off their poetic flair, if so inclined. For many people, including me, part of the joy of reading a novel is the writing style of some of my favorite authors.

A novel can reveal to us what a character is thinking. In screenwriting, you can only write what can be seen and heard on the screen. Sure, there are voice overs, but most directors and producers prefer not to have them unless absolutely necessary.

Screenwriting must be minimalist. Character descriptions tend to be very general, in order to allow for more casting options. Also, movie dialogue must be much shorter. Every sentence and every word must move the story forward in some way.

Novels have room for several subplots. The majority of movies only have one or two, if any. There's simply not enough time for them to develop in about 90 minutes.

Another reason that screenwriting is so exacting is that the audience only has a quick moment to get all they can form each scene. When people read a book, they can go back a few pages if something is not clear. Can't do that in a movie theater.

In books, words reveal the story. In films, images, along with the dialogue, tell the story, but images are preeminent.

On the other hand, for the reasons already mentioned, turning a screenplay into a book is a much easier process. The writer can use all those ideas, characters and subplots he or she had to discard because of limited space and time constraints. They can have more fun with the language and more easily reveal the thoughts, emotions and motivations of their characters. If your novel is a few thousand words more than your editor asked for, you can probably get away with it. But if a screenplay is too short or long, it gets thrown away without even being read.

One difficulty that a screenwriter may have when turning a screenplay into a book is that they now have to be more specific with details of locations and the visual appearance of their characters. So, although writing a novel is not easy, it is easier that writing a screenplay.

Authors' Credibility - Earn Your Reputation

By Nina Haywood

Nowadays, what seems to determine the authors' credibility is their product sales outcome. This concept is termed as "author platform", which denotes how a particular author is made popular through the number of people who had bought the books that they had written. The platform is rooted mainly in selling to potential buyers.

As opposed to rating the authors through the content of the books or the quality of the topics written, the competition is mainly focused on how many people buy the books. Most writers and publishers are now concerned about how the book will attract the broadest audiences and that the books appeal easily captures one's taste. Normally, publishers seldom publish books about an untested topic. This is why books found in major bookstores have similar titles and themes that are released all at the same time.

The method writers make is to find prospective ways to get a new viewpoint of the topic that is broad and attractive, but with the same theme that others had already written. Through this way, the writer will have the confidence to sell the book.

However, just like movies and music releases, there is still a shocking number of insecurity and conservatism making it difficult for readers to know where to place their bet. In spite of a marvelous piece of art, there are still a lot of factors concerned outside the control of publishers. Subsequently, most of them are afraid to admit this. Some have ample books with gigantic marketing costs, but still fail to manage. While others have no marketing at all, but they do incredibly well.

Other basis of credibility is from reviews and endorsements. That is why we see list of people at the back of the book. These people are one way or another, more famous than the author who says good things about the writer and the book. It tries to show credibility of the author's work.

Getting your book or written work reviewed is also a way of earning credibility. On the internet, most bloggers list email addresses, which is something that is not so common in traditional print media. So nowadays it's much easier and faster to have your work submitted for review. If you just approach them with a professional manner, you'd be surprised how many actually will respond. If your submitted work is well written and the blogger likes it, he or she could be making a review of it and endorsing it to others.

The best credibility that an author can receive for writing a work of art in the form of books is no secret ingredient. Writers should write more and write the best that he or she can do. It is also an excellent idea to write online where numerous people can see it anytime.

In conclusion, the author's credibility will only rely on its readers. If one reader enjoys the style of writing of the writer, then eventually the credibility of that writer increases. Most of the people today are too meticulous with their choice of books. Hence, an author should try to give his or her best shot. They should always put their hearts in making written books.

How to make best of Network Marketing

By Network Marketing

Network Marketing is a marketing practice which the merchant not only compensates for the sales the affiliates make, but also for the sub-affiliates that they recruit. Because of this scheme, network marketing is sometimes called Multi-level Marketing (MLM), or Referral Marketing, but maybe the most popular term for this scheme is pyramid scheme, which was often thought about as a scam. Why? Because the people who were recruited may say, why do I have to do all the work and the guy above me earn, when he doesn't do anything? Well, for your information, without the upper affiliate, would you even find out about the opportunity?

I think most of you know who I'm talking about. Yep, students. Students are full of energy, who always look out for opportunity to shine and to earn experiences, they become the perfect fit for this type of marketing. Network marketing is very popular with the people who are looking for part-time jobs with flexible schedules.

Then one day, I was attracted by a representative from Herbalife, a MLM company that sells wide range of personal care and vitamin supplements. It was the first time I heard of MLM and network marketing. Just one day attending their conference, I was hooked and pulled $4,000 out of my saving account to buy their biggest package ... sadly; I was not a good salesman. Just 2 weeks later, I brought the whole package back and return it. Well, it's just my personal story, doesn't mean that they are scam or they don't do as they promised. Herbalife is not the only one, some of other best-known companies in America, including Avon, Mary Kay Cosmetics and Tupperware, fall under the network marketing category. I still remember when I was in college. Just quitted my previous job at a laundry mat, I was looking out for another part-time job that pay better.

Now, people need to understand, Network Marketing is just like affiliate marketing, the only difference is that affiliate marketing is mostly associated with digital and virtual products (Yep, Clickbank products for instance), while network marketing is mostly for physical products (most popular are vitamin supplements, skin care, and weight management products). So please don't expect to be earning $10,000 on the first month. I know that there are a lot of hype about the earnings, especially when you attend their conferences (yes, I did). They would have all the top marketers in the company, in turn, to go stand in front of everyone and talk about how much they earn, which is totally cool and totally makes you want to join right away. However, don't you see what's wrong here? Spending 2 hours just to tell you two things "You must join because you can earn big and there is no limit." YEP! That's all they are going to tell you. I guess that how they made me join, they know where you want them to scratch. But consider this: network marketing is just another type of affiliate marketing, it's just a little harder to make sale because you are dealing with physical products.

Network Marketing is not a scam, but be prepare to work hard to earn money. You don't have to work for anyone, you set your own schedule, and the money you earn is equivalent to the effort you put out. So don't expect to have money fall down onto your hands automatically. The more friends you have the better. And by friends, I mean real friends who you can go to, hang out with, not the few thousands friends on Facebook. Why? Because they will be your first customers and potential downlines. Be prepare to pay upfront. Most companies will ask you to buy their packages consist of many different popular products they offer. That way, you will always have samples to give out. Depend on companies and products they have, their packages range from few hundred dollars to few thousand dollars. So if you want my personal opinion about network marketing, here it is: by all mean, join them and give them a try. If you are talk-active or have sale experiences, you will do great, and you CAN earn big. Just don't expect it to happen too soon. So in sum, to join a company and to be successful in network marketing, you should consider: Network Marketing is affiliate marketing, and you got into the company is a chance for you to earn money. So if you decide to go with it, please don't keeping thinking about how you work and your upline earn money for doing nothing. It's just the way it works.

Use This Powerful Free Publicity Technique--Become an Expert Source

By Danek S. Kaus

One of the best ways to get repeated free publicity from the same news outlet is to become what is called an expert source. An expert source is the go-to person that reporters call whenever they are working on a story related to a certain topic.

So how can you achieve this status?

The first thing to do is establish a relationship with a journalist who covers your area of expertise. If you don't know of one, read the papers or watch the news broadcasts to see who covers what.

If you're in the natural health field, for example, find out who covers health. Then think of some possible ideas that might make good stories for the health reporter.

Next, create a list of experts who can address these subjects. You might want to contact these experts to be sure they want the publicity. Be sure to include your own name and contact information on the list if you are an expert on any of the topics.

The stories must have a news angle and are not simply a promotional pitch for natural health. Often, you can get ideas from trade publications, that is, magazines that are written for professionals in your field. Look for stories about trends, new products, and such. Brainstorm ways in which they might have a local angle.

One great way to get free publicity from the media is to generate controversy. Journalists love controversy. If you come across a controversial topic, consider adding that to your list of story ideas.

Next, call or email the journalist who covers health. If you decide to call, introduce yourself briefly. Very briefly. Tell her you would like to send some possible story ideas from time to time on natural health, with a list of experts who will speak to these issues. Then politely get off the phone and send your story pitches-unless the journalist wants to talk longer.

Or, simply email your list of story ideas. Introduce yourself and mention your credentials in the beginning of the email. Indicate also that you will send them ideas from time to time. You can usually get the email address of a reporter by calling the main phone number of the media outlet.

If the journalist likes any of your ideas, you've helped him in two ways. First, you've given him a great story. Second, you've saved him a lot of time doing research because you've provided a list of experts to interview. When the reporter does the story, a couple of things might happen. You can be one of the experts who gets quoted. Or, you might not. Either way, you win. In the first case, you've gotten some publicity.

In the second case, you've at least established the beginning of what could be a long-term relationship. The journalist now knows who to call to find out who some of the experts are on certain topics. If you don't know who might be appropriate for a given story, offer to find out. Your assistance will be remembered.

If you are continually helpful, eventually, you will be one of the experts who gets most of the free publicity. Plus you have an open door to pitch stories that might feature only you.

Unless otherwise mentioned, you can make a habit of locating an article flush's headline to the left of the page. For immediate past information, all headlines should use present tense, past tense for past perfect and for coming events, use future tense. The punctuation format of headlines is basically normal. First off, some clarity as to what is meant by dark fantasy literature. It'd be safe to assume that such writing concentrates on themes dealing with the murkier side of human nature. Though not unique to these types of novels, the exploration of evil is a theme specific to such writing.

The kinds of out-of-the-ordinary worlds the tale makers create is perhaps a first reason as to the genre's popular appeal. These very same impulses inside people are given an outlet in a way that's safe and engaging, making such material easier to digest and confront. The sheer creativity demanded when dealing with such themes is indeed admirable to fans and newcomers alike.

The imaginary journeys crafted most often contain indirect comments on contemporary life. Although extraordinary events might occur in strange worlds the concerns of everyday life do not escape the observation of most story makers.
