How To Categories Dark Fantasy Books

By Rosemarie Harrell

Dark fantasy books fall into a wide ranging category and it is not easy to know what someone means when they say they like stories in this genre. The most common thought when someone thinks of this genre is that of swords and wizardry. Some people will also correctly think of stories with elements of horror in.

Films such as The Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter which were originally written in this genre have certainly help to make people more aware of the stories in this category. They have not however done anything to quell the confusion about what fits into the category. Many people will most likely have read something without realizing it was in this genre.

As many fiction writers start to blur the lines of horror, reality, and make believe, so it is that more a more stories will fall into this category. Dark fantasy books usually have a variety of elements. These include stories that challenge the frightening side of human nature, paranormal, psychological and weird.

This differs from the horror genre in that it does not deliberately set out to scare its readers with gore and realistic characters, but has a scary undertone to it. These can cover stories about swords and sorcery, stories in which humanity is threatened by other forces and even those with elements of science fiction involved.

A story of this type offers scope for the writer to really explore their imagination and open the reader's imagination as well. The shear scope of scenarios, weapons, characters and worlds that can be used without making the story unrealistic means the writer is free to explore most avenues to help the reader escape the real world and become immersed in the story.

A story in this genre can take the reader from normal surroundings into an unknown world of scary and mythical characters and creatures. In most cases the gore will be kept to a minimum but the power and darkness of the characters will be enough to add an element of horror into the story.

These stories are probably the most difficult to categorize. It is generally easier to say that if it does not fit into any other category then it is likely to fit into the genre of dark fantasy books. It is also true that the vast majority of stories which largely fit into a certain category will more than likely have some of these elements as well.
