Many Ideas To Nurture Your Writing Skills

By Jocelyn Kinder

Written assignments make up a large portion of many courses, and the grade you will receive is strongly based upon them. Even if they are sometimes hard to produce and time consuming, they are essential to your academic and professional futures. Looking over your essay, tutors evaluate your writing skills, your ability to analyze, to assess, to compare and contrast, to express an opinion and to sound persuasive and affirmative. It is obvious to see that your grade is going to be influenced by many factors. Since written assignments are different, you should be able to apply your skills to produce different types without any problems.

Some of the hardest essays to write are those in which you are required to compare and contrast. From the first sight it may seem that it is very easy to compare and contrast things but this really depends on what things are you comparing and contrasting. Comparing something concrete, such as a building or monument, can be hard in itself, but comparing abstract concepts such as philosophical currents, is even more challenging. It is very important to choose objects or events that can be put under the same category at least in one feature out of the others. After all, could you possibly find a way to compare something so different as orange juice and rocky mountains? Of course, this is not the hardest step.

So, what do you do if you feel that none of the matters you are assigned are relevant? A bit of research and assessment go a long way. One of the things you can do is create a chart with the comparable things on top and different features on the side. This way you have a possibility to see in which way they are similar and how they are different. When you are done comparing, you can get started with the process of essay writing. Unless the instructor has provided specific formats, styles and structures to abide to, you can do a little research on those as well. This is an important step, because the layout of your essay will translate to your instructor how smart, educated and resourceful you are, along as giving him an insight to the unique way you process a concept.

Proofreading and editing also rank among the most important things in writing an essay. Since you are probably going to be tired after writing this essay, and thus more likely to miss a mistake, it is always better to postpone the editing process until you are rested and able to catch an error.

Once you are finished, your project is ready to be submitted, and you can be sure your efforts will produce a winning grade.

Book Signing - What You Can Expect

By Judy Miller

For an author, one of the most thrilling moments is when they are invited to participate in a book signing. This is often the stamp of approval many writers need, especially with their first book.

A means of increasing foot traffic and promoting a sense of connectedness with the writing community is how most bookstores would see a book signing. Most bookstores agree to the idea of providing space, time, as well as promotion for a book signing.

This should be a gold mine in promotion from the perspective of a writer. Notices will that will announce the book signing will often be posted by bookstore owners and most will provide announcements in regional newspapers that are designed to promote the book signing.

Bring comfortable shoes and your favorite pen. Enjoying your moment in the sun is what you can do then.

But if you are not yet a well-established author, then here are a few things you should not expect from a book signing.

Having a waiting line. The sale of a significant amount of books. Don't expect a writer's cramp.

In fact, the result of a book signing will most likely be a few friends, family, and an assortment of curious others who have come so that you can personally sign their purchased copy of the book.

So, if that's all there is to it, why do it?

You should consider yourself a 'word farmer' because primarily, you are a writer. What I mean by that is a book signing can be a wonderful time to visit with the general public about your book, its subject matter and why you chose to write the book and be willing to wait to see the seed sprout.

Because of positive contacts with those who do not purchase your book, there are many cases where these patrons will return to purchase the book at a later date.

When it comes to a book signing, this isn't about 'hawking your wares' but rather it's about being an ambassador for the craft of writing and good will.

Keep an eye toward the long-term goals you have in writing and accept the invitation with good grace if you have been invited to participate in a book signing. Don't make too much fuss over a book signing even though it is simply one small step toward your ultimate destination and you should enjoy this step.

In every writer, there is some form of ego but a book signing isn't a good place to don a prima donna persona. Remember the people who come to see you want to leave with something positive to consider - not an author to avoid.

A Brief Insight Into Alaskan History

By Andrea Rivas

The past of Alaska begins in far before it was purchased by America. To understand Alaskan history, it is important to understand the origin. Alaska is a term derived from Alaxsxaq, an Aleut word for great land. The native pronunciation is Al-ay-ek-sa or rather Al-ak-shak. Since then, the term varied from Alashka, Alaksa, and Aliaska, before settling on Alaska. The current meaning is territory.

Today, the name Alaska refers to the whole State, including the Peninsula. The term Alyeska is still around, only that it is the name of a ski resort located in Girdwood. It also refers to an Anchorage consortium that oversees the trans-Alaska pipeline company.

For a period of time, the area was called the Territory of Baranov. This was a time at which it was ruled by Alexander Baranov. By the time America was negotiating the purchase, the name had changed to Russian America. At this time, majority of Americans simply called it the Sewards folly or simply Sewards icebox. Steward was the American in charge of the negotiations and Americans saw it as a wasteland of snow and ice.

Alaska is so rich in history. This can mainly be attributed to its divergent population. It has Spanish, British and Russian influence and finally American. However, the historical wealth is even more enriched by the natives. These native tribes included the Tlingit, Tsimshian, Athabascan Native Americans, Aleuts and Eskimos.

Spain had a lot of command in the early times, before the Russians came. However, their legacy is only survived by only a few names of towns. Such towns include Valdez and as well as the Malaspina Glacier. Alaska did not become a State at once, rather it grown from a department into territory and finally achieved State status.

Alaskan history dates from as far back as the Upper Paleolithic period, which dates back to around 14,000 BC. This is the period around which the native groups emerged in the area. Most of them crossed over from across the Bering land bridge, settled in western Alaska and became hunters.

What Should You Know Before Writing A Good World War 2 Biography

By Mayra Roman

Anyone writing a World War 2 biography must be aware that there are different types of readers who will be drawn to the completed work. People seek out reading material on the Second World War for different reasons, after all. But there are a number of considerations which any writer can keep in mind when it comes to giving their book a wide appeal.

Many readers seeking out biographies are academic researchers, people often working on their own papers or books, who may be seeking a tactical perspective on how the war was fought. The subjects of biographies often had a unique view of events. Their perspective on the events which took place around them from an expert point of view is often what this type of reader is seeking.

This personal perspective on matters is important to any work of this type, and first person accounts and material drawn from primary sources will always improve a book like this. This is also important when it comes to the wider credibility of the work and the respect it will receive. Aspiring writers in particular need the kind of credibility which first hand sources give to any historical work.

One of the best ways to obtain good quality primary source material is to interview people who knew the subject of the biography. People who participated in or witnessed the same events as the subject of the book are also good to speak to. This kind of material is far fresher than anything lifted second-hand from documents or works by other writers.

A writer must also offer some kind of general perspective on the subject's life in the context of wider historical events. The events which were occurring around the subject of the biography are very important. They allow the reader to establish a historical marker for the main subject of the work.

Writing a world war 2 biography is not an easy thing to do for anyone. As increasing numbers of the participants in the drama pass away each year, access to primary source material becomes harder with each passing year. As the events of the war increasingly become consigned to distant documents rather than personal memory, now is a good time to undertake this kind of book.

Read The Books With Strong Female Characters

By Jacklyn Ochoa

Books with strong female characters are still rare. Like there is some unwritten rule that women are in love all the time, unhappy and jealous. But women don't have to act like Thelma and Louise to notice them. They can be clever, independent, funny or powerful, without a great love story.

Key Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell may be one of these ladies. Chief medical examiner, mature, extremely well educated, in high position in society as well as in her job, she is perfectly capable to take care about herself, as well as solving crimes. So much different than Jane Austin's women, but there is also fine similarity present.

women in those stories use other weapons, they use their minds, experience, common sense, not guns. Well, Jackie Brown might be a little different. The first wives Club is an interesting story about women who decided to get back to their former husbands, healing themselves at the same time.

Who ever red Harry Potter remembers Hermione Granger. Smart, persistent, loyal, good looking, honest, brave. All the best characteristics, but the main one is still Harry. One of the most popular books is still Anne of Green Gables, although the novel was written in 1908.

It is important to have different female figures in the literature, as well as in movies. Young generations need some role models representing the strength of character, positive ideals and honesty. It isn't enough to just be a rebel; it has to be something else.

Pippy Longstocking is a shiny example for an independent, powerful girl. Although without parents' love and care, she is happy, positive and amusing little thing able to lift a horse. She has a father, a pirate, but she lives alone, and it is perfectly all right for her. The rules of society just don't apply, and it's no wonder kids just love her adventures. You are allowed to be different.

Information For You About Manuscript Publishing

By Bonita Odom

Manuscripts can be an anthology of short stories or poems, a novel or a play. Whatever it is, the author wants it to be perfect before it is published. They will need to make a list and check everything off to make sure their bases are covered. The first thing to do before manuscript publishing is edit. manuscript publishing

It is not difficult to edit these days because of the software programs available. These software programs will go through the work looking for spelling and grammar issues, automatically fixing them, in many cases. However, there are some problems with using software for this purpose because in a novel or play, there may be intentional grammar errors due to speech and accent differences. In these cases, it is always a good idea to get someone to read over the work in person.

Proofreaders are also necessary. While they may not do a lot of the editing, they can quickly spot errors in the sequence and flow of the book. When a reader comes up on a mistake that is glaringly obvious, a proofreader was not used before the book was published. Proofreaders are prepublication critics and can point out what literary critics will have a problem with.

Authors must copyright their work if they want to keep it safe. There are always thieves of intellectual work prowling for something to steal. An author should not distribute any of his or her work until after it has been copyrighted.

Authors may want to look into the option of self-publishing. While this is a good way to get the book into printed form sooner, it also gives the author more say on its final appearance. A company will provide editing, proofreading, marketing and printing but they will put some restrictions on the author, taking away some of their say in the process.

Whether going through a large company for manuscript publishing, or doing it yourself, you must be proud of the work you have accomplished. It may take time to get a company to publish it, if that is what you are seeking. You must be patient and stay confident.

Self Publishing - Is It The Best Way To Publish Your Book?

By Nicholas Lancaster

To publish your book, the best way might be self publishing. There are several advantages to self publishing that you might not have considered.

The most important thing to remember is that self publishing will firmly place you in control of your book. Many decisions can be made when someone else is paying you to publish your book and such decisions include the title as well as the marketing that can impact not only how well your book will sell but also how it will be received by the reading public, the cover, and the editing of the manuscript.

Self publishing is also faster than traditional publishing. It could take years before you can find a publisher who is interested in buying your work and before you can settle on a contract, it would take more time. All in all, it's a long time to wait.

Self publishing also allows you to retain all the profits from your endeavor. While you may have to put some money up front (depending on the method you use to self publish your book) you will not have to wait for months or years to see income as a result. Most publishers only pay royalties once or twice a year and then those royalties are only a small percentage of the book price. Once you have covered any publication costs, then everything you earn is pure profit when you self publish your book.

Finally, it cannot be overlooked that self publishing offers you an opportunity to break into print that might not be otherwise available. Although traditional publishing is considered to be highly competitive and that a lot of worthwhile manuscripts and authors can't find a publishing home, for that book it's likely that there may be an eager and receptive audience.

You need to realize that self publishing may not suit everyone's needs. If your manuscript still requires some polishing or if you are still struggling with your voice and writing, then you should ask for the assistance of a critique group or professional editor and continue working on your book. If you self publish a book that is not yet ready for publication, then that would be a costly mistake. But if your manuscript is well received by several critical readers and has been polished, then you should at least consider self publishing your book.

Thanks to modern technology, self publishing is easier and less expensive than it has ever been before and it also offers you the advantages of complete control, faster publication, as well as higher profits. Your big break as a writer could be self publishing.

The Past And The Present Of Gold Market History

By Bonita Odom

Gold market history is made every day in London. Here the price is set and almost every day it is different, so making its little bit of history. However, history is made up of tiny threads of time and broad sweeping trends composed of those tiny threads. gold market history

Despite the current volatile and energetic markets that operate twenty-four hours a day the metal is one of the first known to man. There is no way of knowing when it was first traded but there are records in ancient literature that suggest it was in use thousands of years ago. Before the calendar that we now use was invented.

People love the precious metal for good reasons. It is beautiful to behold and can easily be worked into objects. It is malleable but durable since it cannot be touched by rust or corrosion, this holding its value. When the earth was more like Eden than it is today the element was probably widely dispersed, to be found in streams or gullies, glittering brightly.

The element is found widely across the planet and has a universal utility. It may first have been used in forms of barter but as civilizations emerged and became more complex, so coins or bars were minted and made according to standard weights. So money emerged as a means through which economies could grow and develop.

The gold standard played a pivotal role in the development of thee international economy as it is known to-day. Central banks issued notes promising to pay on demand the amount denominated on the note. This provided a standard measure of value which, for some years during the twentieth century was agreed internationally as a troy ounce of the metal. Countries bought and stored it as a way of backing up their fiat currencies with solid, tangible reserves.

In 1971 the standard was abolished and for some years after that the price stagnated. Some countries even began to auction off their holdings at fire sale prices. The folly of such decisions is reflected in current gold market history, as investment demand soars and the value of the precious metal is greater than ever.

Taking A Look At What Makes Good Spy Novels

By Bonita Odom

Books that wrap you up in their story are what most people strive to find. Books that you can't tear yourself away from until the very last page. Good spy novels never disappoint people who are looking for those qualities. Even though every story is different, they all have common components. good spy novels

A skillful author knows that the leading role must be played by someone who is dynamic and able to outwit a demonic and equally intelligent rival. Adding real-life characteristics to the mix creates a character that is endearing and accepted by readers. It doesn't matter if the hero has a few martinis for lunch, as long as he completes his mission.

Just as important as the main character, his opponents must be strong too. They are not there to make friends with the reader, but they must provide worthy conflict to uphold interest. A capable writer can use the cunning antagonist to make his protagonist even more likable and at the same time, the story more exciting.

No espionage thriller would be complete without a daring assignment for the main character to accomplish. It was easy pickings for writers during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Spies were needed to get information from the enemy and save mankind from atomic weapons. While the KGB is no longer a threat, terrorist are.

The series of events in the story are what create the conflict and pace. It is imperative that the author plan the storyline carefully so it doesn't get too confusing or, on the other hand, boring. Readers who enjoy books of espionage want a strong main plot with enough nail-biting twists to keep the story unpredictable to the end.

When the authors of good spy novels combine all the compulsory ingredients with their writing skills, the results are outstanding. Just when the world thought there were no more stories to be told, talented writers come up with even better ones. There really is no end to important missions for great secret agents.

Publishing Your Own Works Of Fiction

By Arthur Goldberry

Self-publishing is thought of the refuge of every young and energetic author tired of sending off their works to the publisher, only to get one rejection letter after the other until the pile of rejection letters is thicker than an average manuscript.

If you're thinking of publishing your own fiction, you owe it to yourself to find out everything you can about the self-publishing business. But in any case, here are some tips - let's start with POD, or print on demand, an up-and-coming alternative for writers who wish to have their works self-published.

Another element of publishing your fiction is knowing how to market it. This can be the deciding factor in determining how many books you'll sell in the first few months. Your marketing needs to be as professional and flawless as possible.

If your promotional materials contain typos and misspelled words, the people handling your fiction will assume that your book is unprofessional and will be reluctant to promote it.

The Internet contains online discussion groups for various genres of fiction. Don't be a wallflower, instead ask all the questions you need to ask and share all the info to help your fellow new writers out. This way, you can learn new things from more experienced writers while helping the community as a guide for your fellow newcomers in the writing game.

When communicating with people online, be sure and include a "signature file" on your correspondence. A signature file is a pre-written file that is automatically attached to the conclusion of an email message.

When creating a signature file, make sure it includes all the information you want people to know about your work of fiction. It's a valuable advertising method of getting information out about your book.

Print on demand works by printing and sending out the books only when there is a demand for them, thus saving you publishing and printing costs.

If you want a certain number of books printed out, you can pay a fee to a vanity publisher to get it done. After the printing, the author is free to market her fiction without the restrictive contracts required of mainstream publishing houses.

Once you've made a name for yourself self-publishing your books, then maybe you're ready to go one step higher and enlist the help of those big publishing houses. They are highly likely to give you an opportunity if they realize you've done pretty well publishing your works on your own.

Ideas For Writing Fiction

By Glenn Matthews

Their own lives is where many writers, especially beginners, would get their ideas from. There are reasons why this is useful, such as relating directly to the main character, you're not likely basing your book on what you've read, and your emotionally invested in the topic. But remember, just because you find this thing that happened to you or your child fascinating, it doesn't mean it will be fascinating to thousands of potential readers.

Real life events are just events, and this happens often. It's a vivid scene you recall with pleasure, or a family joke that's repeated over and over. You may look at it as a turning point in your life or it evokes strong emotions when you remember it. But it's rare for reality to provide plots.

Writers fail to develop elements to make a good story if they stick too closely to what happened like character faced with a conflict, tension mounting as the character tries to solve it, a climax and resolution that's satisfying to the character and reader.

If your main character is really your son, you might not want to get him in trouble or throw rocks in his path. However, you have to do it. You have to if you want to create a story where the readers are hooked and wondering what's going to happen in the end.

Speaking of endings, if the resolution of your story comes too easily, it's probably obvious and predictable. Try mixing up real life and have the situation evolve in a different direction. Surprise yourself, and you'll surprise an editor.

First focus on whether it's a plot or a theme however you get your idea. What the author wants to convey to the reader and the underlying meaning of the story is what the initial idea is most of the time. Appreciating one's thoughts, friendship, etc. are examples of themes and they should be universal in their appeal. Then play around with the sequence of events until you develop a plot (what actually happens in the book) that makes this theme clear to the reader. Tell your story from a childhood point of view if you're using a childhood incident as your story's foundation.

Success Defined By Writers

By John Dorian

Writers are an interesting breed of humanity - they can make us feel joy, sadness, anger and empathy. Sometimes they can cause us to feel all these emotions simultaneously.

There are certainly more lucrative methods of gaining an income, yet everyday thousands of individuals will sit down at their keyboard pounding out a story that may never actually be published.

There is a creative energy required to create a meaningful story. It is hard to invest that energy into a story if there is a feeling the story has no chance of success, yet writers will do so.

So, what possibly pushes a writer to continue writing, even if the results of the amount of work they put in are often scarce? The answer is found in a quote from author Isaac Asimov, "I write for the same reason I breathe -- because if I didn't, I would die."

Some writers explain that the stories they write are stories that first formed in their minds and gave them no rest until after they were poured out on paper; only, of course, to be replaced with a new story after the one was written. Some people simply write for themselves, while others prefer to share their works with others.

Many writers are not in the market to be famous, they simply agree with the sentiments of Francois Mauriac, "Each of us is like a desert, and a literary work is like a cry from the desert, or like a pigeon let loose with a message in its claws, or like a bottle thrown into the sea. All they aspire is to at least touch one person with their writings.

But, it is however important that you hold on to a flame of hope that your message will be heard by more than one - if the message or story were important enough to be shared, why shouldn't many people partake of them?

Sometimes the joy found in writing is simply in reaching the end of your story. Tom Clancy once said that he measured success in writing by finishing a book, and having a stack of filled papers that told the whole story. If you can make it to that point, he asserted, you are successful.

When most people begin to write, they do so without even entertaining the thought of ever being wealthy. They write because they can see no other option to relieve their creative overfill. On average, writers only get back minimum wage, when one considers the amount of work they put in, in relation to the money they earn, but few ever complain.

For many writers, having the chance to write is success in itself.
