How To Avoid Scams When Getting A Book Deal

By Victor Hood

A hurdle for any writers is how to get a book deal without being scammed. Publishers Are Not Exempt From Questionable Practices.

Make Sure to Keep the Warning Signs in Mind

A fee is charged to read your manuscript. You are the one providing the product that they should sell. There's no reason why you have to pay to see if they are interested in your work.

Offers subsidy contracts When they promote themselves as commercial publishers, you pay them to have your book published. Do you think POD, or publish-on-demand, publishers like authorshouse, IUniverse, and Xlibris are all legitimate publishers? As long as the author realizes the costs and limitations of POD publishing, then they are legitimate. Publish On Demand books are rarely stocked in bookstores.

When it comes to bait and switch There are some publishers who, even though they are a vanity press, would hide behind the mask of respectability and call themselves traditional. Is there a way of telling for sure? Try to look at their websites and you will see that it's a red flag if the focus is on recruiting writers rather than promoting books they publish.

Other publishers 'will accept' your manuscript and then come back a few weeks later and say that their list for the next season is full but they would dearly love to publish your book. You just need to share the risk with them by giving them some money.

Telling the author that their project has merit is the new twist but the author will have to find an investor that will sponsor their title. Even though many authors shell out the necessary dollars rather than try to find an investor, the publishers isn't asking the author directly for any funds.

What are rebates? According to publisher, any amount or fee that you pay them will be completely refunded when your book reaches a certain level, usually in the thousands. Another option is when the magic sales level has been reached, they will provide a comparable number of free copies.

There is a twist on rebates and this involves the publisher matching your monetary contribution in marketing efforts for your title. Marketing their own titles is what publishers are supposed to do. The match most likely will not be in advertising dollars, review copies sent, or book tour expenses but the efforts of the in house staff. It's also likely that these efforts won't be focused specifically on your title.

How to get a book deal without getting scammed is possible for any author. Just keep these warning signs in mind.
