6 Ways To Manage Raw Emotions

By Stephanie Cole

When rage erupts, the impact can only be equated to that of a volcano. Such emotional outbursts are likely to cause fractures in relationships that have taken decades to build. Raw emotions may also cause the culprit to damage properties and eventually face legal suits over issues that would have been resolved better. Everyone must learn when to be emotional and how to take control of such situations.

Take a deep breath. This is a perfect technique that can be used to deal with any situation on the spot. It works when you are overwhelmed by anger and feel like doing something destructive. Even a normal breath will work to avoid attracting unnecessary attention. Your mental focus should be on the breathing and not the situation at hand. This gives you time to cool tempers and make a better judgment of your next action.

Put yourself in the position of your opponent. This is an attempt to rationalize and understand the situation from the point of the offender. It is based on the assumption that human beings are inherently good. It is a recognition that rarely will people harm you out of malice. This means that you are giving the offender the benefit of doubt. You will assume that if the situation was different, the reaction would have differed.

Walk away from the area or take a break for a while. There are emotional reactions that result from pent-up anger and anxiety. When anger accumulates, it is extremely difficult to deal with it. However, taking a few days off or walking away allows you to gain better control of your reaction. Walk into a park or watch the view of the horizon from a vantage point. This helps you to relax and therefore act appropriately.

Fight to regain control of your thinking before you do something catastrophic. Outbursts happen when you lose control of the mind. You could be under the control of stress or anxiety. This leads you to rushed and emotional decision. The speed at which you regain control depends on how well you have mastered your feelings. It take practice to resist being emotional.

Practice to be at peace in all circumstances. This means that regardless of what comes your way, you will remain calm and collected. Learn to sit quietly and still as you meditate on positive ideas. This can be achieved by learning breathing techniques or using stilling music. Reflect on the goodness that resides in the heart of everyone. You should also wish and strive to stay happy.

Label your feelings and then express them. This is important in building self-awareness. You become conscious of who you are and can therefore take responsibility of your actions or words. Once you express your feelings, you let out the emotions that have built-up and can now calm down. When the pressure that has built-up is not released, you are likely to explode dangerously in future.

Mastery of anger and rage is a personal journey that everyone should take consciously. Each person is aware of situations that trigger anger or rage. Deal with your limits and ensure that the reactions are controlled. Through practice, no emotion will overcome you. This is a guarantee that all your decisions will be rational.
