Book Reporting - Quick And Easy Tips

By Harold Spencer

A book report is defined as a short summary of a book, the reader's interpretation of it and their reaction. Depending on the target audience of the book report, it can be tailor-fit to meet their specific needs, though in general, the book report should be replete with details relevant to the book in question.

From the vantage point of academicians, a book report's eventual goal would be to gauge how well a student can read a book, how well they can write and how well they can articulate their thoughts. Educators commonly assign book reports to students in order to help them to build or acquire additional knowledge about a particular subject and to help them better understand how to interpret a book and it's meaning.

From a writer's standpoint, book reports are often used to entice readers to buy a specific book that has recently been released. This is commonly called a book review, which usually includes the columnist's viewpoint, opinion and criticism (if any) of the book. This is not unlike the movie review - this time, a journalist would be asked by his/her editor to criticize a book and everything about it. This provides potential readers with insight and often persuades or deters another from buying a particular book.

Book reports have different structures and it all depends on whom the reports are customized for. An elementary school student, for instance, would have a totally different, and likely more simple book report than another student who may be in high school or college. The layout, however, would be the common denominator for all book reports of all varieties. This would consist of the title, the introduction of the report, the body, with the summary or plot of the book included and finally the reaction, or closing paragraphs. In the final paragraph you would typically find a few critical statements or praises for the book, the writer's own interpretation or any final impressions or conclusions drawn from the book.

The length of a book report will also be varied - it all depends on the age group it is assigned to. Generally, a book report assignment would normally be no more than three pages. Students at fifth form up to university may be assigned to write longer reports, replete with details of the book's characters, the plot and other essential parts of the tome.

Patience is required when writing a book report as it needs to be mapped out before writing it. The length of the book should be directly proportionate to the time that would be allotted to each student to complete the book report in question. Generally, a book report assignment is requested within one or two weeks. Leeway can be granted to students who have special needs or concerns, thus requiring extra time to finish.
