How Do You Select Topics For Your Articles?

By Ashley Houston

There are many things to consider when writing an article. One of the most important steps is to choose a good topic. Choosing a topic you are passionate about is important for several reasons.

Aside from the fact that it will be easier for you to write about something you enjoy, your passion for the topic will shine through your writing.

Most editors can recognize and appreciate enthusiastic writing.

Because of the fact that you already have plenty of knowledge about the topic, you won't have to worry about having to look up information.

Writing will become a source of satisfaction and pleasure for you.

You might feel that writing in the area of your interest is too limiting, but it is possible to branch out into areas that are similar. For instance, if your area of expertise is in chemistry, then writing about health should not be too much of a learning curve. And since you will be reaching a new category of people, you will be able to enlarge your markets as well. Many magazines have a health section. And, health topics can literally be endless, as one can range from sport injuries to nutrition. You can also widen that further and write on nutrition applied to different age groups. See how the ripples widen? In no time you'll be able to submit articles to many different magazines or websites and you'll still be writing with passion and enthusiasm.

Most freelancers have no trouble writing about their favorite topics. You can submit to magazines specializing in that topic, but what happens if you are asked to write about a topic you hate, or know little about? If you can research and write, then all you have to do is to put your skills to work for yourself. If not, you can always refuse the assignment. If, for example, you are asked to write about finance and investments and you are not even familiar with the terms used, then unless you are a quick learner and love research, your reputation might suffer.

Writing virtually is even riskier, because you don't have the benefit of an editor. You need to make sure not only that you report accurate facts, but also that you have something juicy to deliver. A plain article that doesn't offer anything new will only hurt your reputation in the writing world.

For example, everyone knows that Fido needs to be fed, watered and exercised properly to be a happy doggie. But could it be that maybe someone doesn't know to check their floppy ears for ticks and possible signs of illness? And would they be able to recognize a certain disease a particular type of dog is more likely to develop? Or could it be possible they haven't heard of an old timer remedy that could save them money? If this is the type of information you can deliver, you have a future writing articles.
