Come On Now, What's Stopping You From Writing A Novel?

By Edward French

Writing a novel is one of those many things in life that are easier said than done, and we can attest to this. You are not alone when you make this discovery, as many novice writers and even published authors find themselves in the very same predicament. Perhaps one of the most difficult things may be trying to discover who, what, where, when, why and how you are going to develop the next "Pulitzer Prize Winning" fiction book. This article will provide you with a number of thoughts and ideas which should make your task not quite so difficult and much more enjoyable.

Having the right mental attitude and the right reasons for writing the book you have always wanted to write would likely be the prevalent factor that would determine your book's success or failure. Having the proper mindset can be manifested by thinking of your book as something you want to do more than anything else, rather than a simple "cash cow" meant to transform you from starving writer to filthy-rich author.

To help you get in the right frame of mind about this, perhaps you should check out some of the statistics about having a book published in the United States. Everybody should know that here in the U.S., about 162,000 books are published on a yearly basis. Trepidation is NOT something you should feel upon reading these numbers! On the contrary, if 162,000 books will be "born", yours can be too. There is a possibility, to put it succinctly, that if you show the passion and the gumption, the interest and the initiative, the desire and the derring-do, we could be seeing your name in the list of the New York Times' best-sellers! If you have a passion for doing something, that should make it easier for YOU to reach your objectives.

You now have the right mental attitude now let's move on to what you are going to write about.

Obviously, you already have an idea or thoughts on what you want to write about. If this is your first time to write a novel, it would be a good idea for you to stick to something that you have a degree of conversance with, something you love to write about. Writing about the things in life you are most interested in would decrease the chances of bailing out due to boredom, or if you decide to push forward, it could reduce the time it takes to complete and the degree of difficulty in your writing.

One of the things that ties directly in with the subject of your book, will be the style of writing you elect to use. Let us assume your day job is as a police officer, and because of your experience in the trade, you have become a fan of murder mysteries; you're a regular "Arthur Conan Doyle" and "Agatha Christie" fan. What you want to do now is to go beyond Mr. Doyle and Ms. Christie and read as many murder mystery books as you can at your local library. Read every book and while reading take notes about the style of the authors writing. You will soon begin to recognize the style that fits you the best.

As you are well aware there are many other aspects to writing, which can make writing a book difficult, they are beyond the scope of this article at this time. However, by having the right mental attitude, writing about something you know or very passionate about, taking the time to develop your own style, you should be able to start writing a novel which could become the next "best seller" - especially with some solid guidance.
