The Buildup Of Alaskan History From Various Archaeological Artifacts

By Dawn Bradford

The foundation of the present day Alaskan history comes from the various artifacts found in this area by archaeologists. This beautiful area surrounded by its beautiful terrains and landscapes is a popular destination of people from the world over. However, what intrigues most people more is its past.

The various pieces of animal bones and skins indicate the presence of early inhabitants in this area. From all these artifacts, archaeologists have obtained some clues of the tribal groups that could have inhabited the area. These include the Eskimos, some sections of Indians and the Aleuts. Later on, there came other European inhabitants such as the Russians and French attracted by the many opportunities that lay untapped in the region.

The Aleutian people were thought to have inhabited the Aleutian Islands, as the Indians lived in the southern sections and the interior passage of this region. On the other hand, Eskimos dominated the coastal areas, from Yakutat to the Prince William Sound. All of them organized themselves according to their ways of living.

From the artifacts, it is concluded that their main means of livelihood was hunting and gathering. Thus, these hunter-gatherer societies made use if the various animal products to make their lives comfortable. For example, they used animal skins as clothing and the bones to make jewelry and various other products.

The peaceful existence of these people was however distracted during the 17th and 18th centuries, when people from the European continent such as Russians began posing claims on this area. The basis of all these was caused by various factors. These include animal products like fur, and hunting of marine animals like whales and seals.

With the ensuing conflicts with the original inhabitants however, Russians no longer had the resources to maintain their territories here. It is because of this that they sold this area to America in 1876. It however gained statehood after the Second World War in 1959. Thus began the second phase of the Alaskan history in modern time. alaskan history
