Good Books With Female Protagonists

By Petra Berg

A Good female lead in a book has qualities of determination, focus, bravery and selflessness. Of all the genres available to readers there is no pigeon holing of lead characters, after all a good book is simply a good book, male or female. Her following are a few significant books with female protagonists who do their job better that anyone else could have.

One such character is 'Carrie.' This disturbing book describes how Carrie is hurled into depression and madness by the constant bullying Carrie receives. There is no respite for Carrie as she struggles to understand her strange new gifts while going through puberty.

Stieg Larsson's excellent opening book of the Millennium trilogy, 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' introduces Lisbeth Salander. Lisbeth is an investigative agent in her debut appearance. Lisbeth is perfect as an archetypal woman of strength and resilience, and her sharpness and common sense serve her well in this brilliant book.

Maya Angelou tells her own tale in the impeccable 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.' This book is based on the early life of the author, a time when society was dominated by male authority. Racism, rape and literacy are among the issues seen from a young girl's point of view in this excellent novel.

Hannibal Lecter is a cannibal, and has the secrets that can catch the serial killer on the loose. It is Clarice Starlings job to try and extract this information and bring the murderer to justice. Clarice pulls no punches in this gory but engrossing dramatic horror.

The strength of a good lead character lies in the personality traits of that character. Fearless attitude, rigorous scrutiny, and an independent mind ensure that these ladies will always stay one step ahead of the antagonists in their lives. In books with female protagonists and all books the real impact comes from the lead, and these women are inspiring in their power.
